As elegant and strong as continuous box joints are, they don't always have to be a
series of complementary cuts. With the ChestMate, craftsmen can choose to space
the square or rectangular cuts randomly or even mix them in with through dovetails.
Again, the indexing/story board is the secret. It holds the spacing information and
the ChestMate Jig holds the desired inserts. Versatility, simplicity and elegance all
leading to craftsmen signatures. A 3/4 in. insert and a 1/2 in. insert is included.
Box PIns Clearing Box Tails
After determining the spacing of the random joints and making the indexing boards,
the pins are cut and then the material remaining between them is removed. With a
scrap piece of stock, the insert is mounted to the ChestMate jig in the opposite
direction and adjusted to allow the cutting of exact width tails shown above.
Once each operation is understood, it is not difficult to combine the
through dovetail operation with the random box joint operation
resulting in unique and attractive corners that will enhance any project.
