THROUGH DOVETAILS
Story Board Image
The story/indexing board is the heart of the pin board and tail board layout. The
way it is fabricated assures perfect fits every time. It's very easy to do.
1- The arrangement of through dovetails is roughly sketched out on the project
board.
2-The approximate center lines are transferred to the story/indexing 1 x 12
blank.
3-With a table saw, one eighth cuts are cut into the story/indexing blank. They
simply have to be parallel and center to center and only has to be approximate.
4-The story/indexing blank is ripped into approximate thirds. One for the pin
boards, one for the tail boards and an extra one.
5-A screw and washer act as a stop for aligning them when clamping to the
project board.
Tail Board Image
The ChestMate Dovetail Jig is set up with the tail cutting insert, which has a
tapered key at the base that sets in the saw cuts of the story/indexing board
which is clamped to the back side of the work piece.
The router has a standard dovetail cutter attached.
Simply locate the jig into each saw cut, clamp tight and move the router into the
workpiece cutting accurate tails every time.
Note that the story/indexing board backs up the cuts as well as the front
clamping board does.
Pin Board Image
The ChestMate Dovetail Jig is set up with the pin cutting insert, which has a
tapered key at the base that sets into the saw cuts of the story/indexing board
which is clamped to the back side of the work piece. The pin cutting insert is
easily adjustable on a scrape board first to determine your choice of fit .
The router has a standard straight cutter attached.
Simply locate the jig at each saw cut, clamp tight and move the router into the
workpiece cutting accurate pins every time.
Note that the story/indexing board backs up the cuts as well as the front clamping
board does.
Removing Left Over Stock
When the spacing between cuts exceeds the standard, unwanted material remains.
The ChestMate Dovetail jig, without an insert is clamped over each unwanted
detail to machine it away with the same cutter used with the pin cutting operation.
Scrap is clamped to each side of the project board to eliminate tear out.

The indexing/story board is easy to make. Make the parallel saw cuts first and then cut it into thirds. One for the pin boards, one for the tail board and an extra one in case you need it. Spacing between cuts does not have to be accurate. More information at bottom of page.
