Keeping It Simple
Development of any product should be fun. The results are always more positive that way. I always enjoyed making dovetails, my first jig being a
low cost 12 inch bench model I used for making half blind dovetails for bureau and cabinet drawers. It did the job because I never had a need for
anything larger and the boards used were not too heavy to challenge the construction of the inexpensive bench top dovetail fixture.
I added a very expensive 24 inch bench top dovetail fixture to my shop sometime after college tuitions and weddings were in the past. The driving
motivation was to make dovetail chests, like the old ones always admired when visiting antique shops through out Cape Cod. I already knew
when I bought my new dovetail jig I was pleased with the quality and robustness of the fixture. I wasn't as happy having to have to purchase the
through dovetail templates separately but knew I would get over it. It took some time to master the fixture, especially when making my pin boards.
With all dovetail fixtures, a pin board has to be rotated 180 degrees after making the cuts on one end in order to make the cuts on the opposite
end. As a result, if the template isn't the same from left to right as it is from right to left, naturally the dovetail box will not go together. Also, if the
starting point for board edge to template isn't the same from one side to the other, there are assembly issues. Practice makes perfect though.
Developing the ChestMate Dovetail Jig was the most fun I've had before or since during any development project. There wasn't any sour grapes
in the challenge, just a desire to design for something we could simply take out and use leaving the user instructions behind. Every aspect I
pursued seemed to fall into place. The custom indexing board was a natural solution for the pin board rotation problem and the system being a
lightweight jig made it a natural to adjust itself to the bow typical of many wide boards as well as cost effectiveness and robustness without
creating excessive weight. And most important with the ChestMate Dovetail Jig is the user's ability, on any width board, to have variable spacing
from dovetail to dovetail without right to left and left to right symmetry.
The ChestMate Dovetail Jig is truly unique and is the opinion of myself and many customers that it just might be the most dovetail jig you can buy
for the money.

| Continued from above.... Easily accommodating large boards and offering variable spacing are nice features but have nothing to do with the machining of precision dovetails. But, being able to back up both the front and the back of the cut, count on your pin width adjustment being the same for all pins, compensating for bowed boards and knowing the start of your pattern will be exactly the same when rotating your pin board for opposite end cutting all definitely do. Everything else the ChestMate does just makes it more unique. A dovetail jig designed by a woodworker for woodworkers....Thank you for visiting.....Larry Douglas |
| Greetings, Twenty years from now there may be available an affordable personal CNC machine that can easily and quickly provide any dovetail pattern on any size board desired.
